Breathe

Let's have a little pep talk.
Mostly because I need it.

Theater is hard because it's not about writing papers and turning in book work (okay, most of the time...*coughScottcough*). It's not about labs or essays or exams. It is different than any other classes or major you have in college because it requires YOU as a human, as a person. It requires all you can give of yourself and your energy and that is not something everyone can give all the time. Theater can kill you, if you're not careful because we as actors are running and running and running and giving and giving and giving and going and going and going all day every day. No, we don't necessarily have three papers to write but we do have two monologues to memorize and a scene to work on and rehearsal to go to and give 110% at and, oh wait, we still have three papers to write because we are expected to take those General Education classes (while no one else is expected to take extensive art classes).
Okay, sorry, I am clearly a little snappy today. Listen, this is in no way meant to invalidate anyone's busy life. I understand that being human is so exhausting sometimes, no matter what you do in life. But listen: let's talk about how to stop, how to breathe, and how to say no sometimes.

Know yourself so that you know when you are burnt out- when you can't run anymore- when you just need to sleep- when you need to take a pause and take a breath-- you can take a minute to refocus and center yourself.
Sometimes you may have to say no to opportunities, friends, family, people, fun, etc, and it is hard! I know it is but buckle down. Know when to give yourself a break.
I don't know what more to say. The concept is simple but the act of it is somehow difficult. Just breathe and know that you are loved. A good friend and mentor of mine is teaching me this and I am slowly learning. Breathe. Breathe.
Check out this graphic I've included. I am trying to live by this and man, it is fantastic. Take care of yourself, people.
