The First of Her Kind
In my family, I am kind of the first of my kind.
I was adopted. I am not going to deny the effect being adopted has had on my life because believe it or not, it has, hugely and greatly, though you will never comprehend that unless you are also adopted. It is life-changing, truly.
So, we start there. In my family, immediate and extended I was and still am, the only one adopted.
My family is really sweet, all of them. They're all really nice and have a softer side to them, and are just so dang thoughtful! Guess who is the odd one out there? Not saying that I am not loving, I am and I really care deeply about people, but I'll be extremely, ridiculously, real with you. Painfully so. I will tell you exactly what you don't want to hear. I will be hard on you, sometimes unnecessarily so. I will hold you to a higher standard than probably anyone else because I am a human too. I will not make things easy for you (given, that's not on purpose). I am sharp, not soft. I am intense and can be louder than literally anyone I've ever met (like, seriously, try to be louder than me, I dare you- I have not seen it done). I am the rule-breaker. I am the "rebel child." In these exact ways, I am the first of my kind.
No, I will not hold my tongue. No, I will not put up with your irrationality, illogicality, unfairness, and hard-pressed biases. I am here to offer perspective and say what needs to be said, and if I cannot speak then I will not be here because the things I say are important. No, I am not a crowd-pleaser. No, I don't care what you think about me. Yes, I will do what I want and what needs to be done. No, you cannot stop me, and it's extremely unlikely you can change my mind about anything. I am firm- I hold my ground. I will not move or sway to please you and I will fight for what I think is right, even when the "thing" I am fighting for is not right but the "listening-to-others-and-seeing-their-point-of-view-is." I am the only one of this kind in my family.
I am very liberal. Yes, if you're wondering, I am pro-choice, I'm for the legalization of gay marriage, I support euthanasia, I think government controlled health care is important, I'm a believer in abolishing the death penalty, and I'm all for self-protection and carrying concealed weapons (yes, I am aware that is not liberal, leave me alone). My whole family and many extended members to my knowledge are very conservative. I have no problem with this. Like holy cow, I am definitely the first of my kind here. Let us also include this sort of because hello, politics-- I am anti-feminism. I think much of my family would consider themselves some kind of feminist, so, I stick out there too, don't I?
There are much more small but big things I could say, but I will leave things simply at this.
